How to select the correct replacement Coil Spring Window Balance
Selecting the correct replacement coil spring balance can be tricky. With this guide, we aim to simplify the process and provide you with as much information as possible. Read below to learn what to look for when selecting the correct replacement coil spring balance.
Thickness
The first step in measuring the correct coil spring balance system is to measure the thickness of your coil. For example, our Series 31 coil spring balance system is 9/16" (0.562"). This measurement is important to make sure the balance fits into your jamb.
Sash Weight and Stamp
Next, you will have to determine the weight rage of the balance you need. Many times this is as simple as looking at your current coil springs. Generally speaking, these balances will have a number printed onto the coil itself or on the plastic housing. The balances pictured in this article are stamped with the number 9. That is the weight you would select when ordering your replacement balance.
If you don't see a stamp, or your stamp doesn't match what is listed on the balance's product page, please contact us for assistance.

Here you can see the stamp printed onto the coil. You may have to pull the coil out a bit to see the number.
Locking Collar (Cam)
Next, you will need to choose the correct locking collar or cam. This collar allows the coil pack to expand in the jamb and lock into place so the sash can be tilted inwards. The color of the collar determines how much the coil pack expands. Below you can see an example of the differences in thickness.
Here you can see the differences in thickness between the locking collars. The blue collar is the thinnest, while the red collar is the thickest.
Tandem or Triple Case Applications
Tandem or triple case simply refers to the number of coil packs that you have. Tandem would mean you have the base coil pack plus one additional pack for a total of two coils. Triple case means you have the base coil pack plus two additional packs for a total of three coils
