How to Replace Block and Tackle Window Balances

How to Replace Non-Tilt Block and Tackle Window Balances

The process for replacing a block and tackle window balance in a non-tilt double or single hung window is easy. Follow these simple steps and your window will be working smoothly in no time.

Step 1:

First, pop out the two take out clips located on each side of the upper portion of the inside jambs. Now, lift the sash evenly up to the take out clips so the balances catch on them and are secured in place. This step allows the sash to be removed from the jambs. Now give the sash a push to the left or right and swing the sash out from one side to remove it.

Step 2:

Next, you'll need to remove the old balances. First, push the balance down and out from under the take out clips to disengage the balances. Your old balance has now been removed! Repeat these steps for the other side of the window.

Step 3:

Now it's time to install the new balances. First, place the hook on the bottom of the balance into the hole on the bottom of the frame, then position the balance in place with the take out clip and push it down and under the take out clip to re-engage the balance. Repeat on the other side of the window. Now, take the sash and first push it into one side of the frame and then swing into place. Close the window and push in the take out clips.

Last, install your sash stops, if applicable, at the top of the window to prevent over-extension and permanent damage to balances as shown here.

Conclusion

That's it! Your window should operate as good or better than new!
