How to Replace Tilting Spiral Window Balances
The process for replacing a spiral window balance in a tilting double or single-hung window is easy. Follow these simple steps and your window will be working smoothly in no time.
Step 1:
The first step is to raise the sash a few inches. Next use the tilt latches to disengage the sash from the frame. Tilt the sash evenly inwards and remove the sash from the frame. Use the special tension tool to disengage the balances from the pivot lock shoes and release the tension from the balance. This step is very important so follow these steps carefully and refer to the video below for a visual guide if you need it.
Step 2:
You may now remove the balances from each side of the window frame by unscrewing them from the top. Inspect the pivot lock shoes for damage. If they show signs of excessive wear or damage, replace them now. Always replace the shoes from the top of the frame.
Step 3:
Mount the balances at the top of the frame using the same hole that the old balance used. Next, push the spiral rod back into the balance as far as it can go. Once raised, attach the tensioning tool to the bottom pin. Turn the tool clockwise a few times before engaging the rod in the slot on the pivot lock shoe. Repeat the process on the other side of the window.
Step 4:
Reinstall your sash, engaging the pivot lock shoes and carefully tilt the sash into position. Engage the tilt latches to secure the sash to the frame.
Last, install your sash stops at the top of the window to prevent overextension and prevent permanent damage to your balances.
Conclusion & Additional Help:
That's it! Your windows should operate as good or better than new.
