Series 130 Extended Travel Block & Tackle Window Balance
Please see our article regarding our Series 320 Extended travel balance.
The Series 130 extended travel block and tackle window balance is somewhat less common balance than our standard Series 400 or Series 300 block and tackle balance. These balances may look similar, but there are some key differences that make it so these balances are not interchangeable. Continue reading to learn how to identify your balance.
Stamp
Normally, the stamp on the balance is a key identifying feature. However, the stamp on the Series 130 and the Series 400 are identical which can make them appear to be the same. In this case, the stamp will not tell you which balance you have. To definitively identify your balance, you will have to look and the length of the metal channel and the bottom guide.
Notice how the two stamps are identical.
Length
One of the key identifying features of the Series 130 balance is the length of the metal channel. The metal channel for the Series 130 is shorter than it is for the 400 series. In our example, the Series 400 balance is 18" long, whereas the Series 130 is about 17-7/8". In our experience, the length of the Series 130 can be between the 5/8" and 7/8" mark but is always shorter than a standard Series 400 balance.
This is a Series 400 balance (above). Notice how the balance measures exactly 18"
This is a Series 130 balance. Notice how the balance is shorter than a standard Series 400. This balance measures 17-13/16"
Bottom Guide
The bottom guide on the Series 130 is probably the most noticeable difference between the two balances. The Series 130 bottom guide is what makes the balance an extended travel balance. There is a roller located within the bottom guide. This roller and its location allow for the balance to have an additional amount of travel.
Notice how the Series 130 bottom guide (bottom) has a roller inside the guide. The Series 400 balance has its pulley system located above the guide.
Rivets
The Series 130 has another minor difference in addition to the ones mentioned above.
The Series 130 is sometimes a rivetless balance, meaning there are no rivets holding the top and bottom guides in place. The guides are held in place by spring tension from the pulley and spring system.
This isn't always the case. Some older style extended travel balances have rivets, but newer ones do not.
Notice how the Series 130 (top in both images) does not have rivets holding the guide in place.
